Insight Nordic TV & Streaming

This analysis covers both the TV- and streaming markets in the Nordic countries. It rests on three pillars: the consumers, the market, and the actors. Analyzing the consumers takes us far – but not all the way. Studying the actors and the market as a whole is just as important.

EARNINGS

Wrapping up the Q1 earning season

The Q1 earning season is coming to an end. Disney and Warner Bros Discovery are the last two out to present their earnings reports. Here are a few of the highlights:

Disney

  • Revenues for Disney increased 7% YOY to USD 23.6 billion in the quarter ended March 29, 2025.
  • Disney posted net income of USD 3.28 billion compared to a net loss of USD 20 million a year ago, which translated to adjusted earnings per share of USD 1.4, up 20%.
  • 126 million Disney+ subscribers were reported, an increase of 1.4 million QOQ.
  • Total revenue from Disney+ and Hulu increased 8% YOY, to USD 6.12 billion for the quarter, partly driven by higher retail pricing.

Warner Bros. Discovery

  • Total revenue for Warner Bros. Discovery was USD 9 billion in Q1 2025, representing a 9% ex-FX decrease compared to Q1 2024.
  • Advertising revenues decreased 8% ex-FX, as ad-lite subscriber growth was more than offset by domestic linear audience decline.
  • Streaming revenue rose 8% to USD 2.65 billion, with fees from distribution and ad sales both increasing as new subscribers joined services such as Max.
  • Global streaming subscribers were 122.3 million, an increase of 5.3 million global subscribers compared to Q4 2024.

Insight Nordic Media & Markets

This analysis tracks the progress of individual and household payments per service and actor, as well as overall media expenditures. The primary focus is mapping out the allocation of expenditures across audio, video, text, and access.

CONTENT

Viaplay invests in new forms of content production in Denmark

The Nordic streaming service Viaplay is investing in the development of new content production formats for its platform, including YouTube formats, in-house productions, and video podcasts (vodcasts) recorded in Viaplay’s own newly built studio.

Viaplay is exploring new directions for content production and distribution. The initiative marks a step towards a broader, more relevant and more varied content offering that appeals to both existing and new customers.

“We have always been driven by the ambition to be the best when it comes to content production, and that’s why we’re constantly looking for new ways to innovate. With this new initiative, we aim to create new, relevant content that not only engages but also inspires and entertains our viewers,” says Mads Lindemann, Head of Creative Content at Viaplay.

The new focus on in-house productions enables Viaplay to control the process from concept development to finished product, which enables rapid response when good ideas come along. The first example of a successful in-house production is Vivi’s New Bum, which premiered in autumn 2024 – a format now followed up by the brand-new program Vivi and Isabell: Us Against the World, produced by Deluca. The show premiered yesterday on Viaplay and stars former Paradise Hotel winner Vivi Bach and her twin sister Isabell Bach. Filming is also underway for the next in-house production, featuring influencer and Paradise Hotel winner Christel Trubka.

There is more to come from Viaplay’s in-house production. Viaplay’s first YouTube format, produced exclusively for the platform, A World of Difference – with Jeppe Ølgaard, premieres tomorrow. YouTuber Jeppe Ølgaard travels to Asia to explore the contrasts different countries offer – the hottest and coldest, the richest and poorest, and those with the best and worst food.

Viaplay is also actively producing vodcasts. The first example is the crime vodcast Spotlight, where host Camilla Soltani and journalist Jesper Vestergaard Larsen review and discuss various current criminal cases. Spotlight is now available for streaming on Viaplay. Additionally, Vivi and Isabell Bach’s own vodcast Vivi and Isabell – Ask Us Anything premieres today, with several other vodcast projects in the pipeline.
