Serie A could launch own direct-to-consumer streaming service

The rising prices of sports rights continues to be a hot topic in the TV & streaming landscape. Now, the Italian top domestic football league, Serie A, says it is ready to launch a direct-to-consumer streaming service if broadcasting rights bids will not meet the asking price.

This comes after offers have remained below the EUR 1 billion annual price tag requested by clubs for the five years starting from the 2024-2025 season. Serie A has postponed a decision on the sale of the rights to broadcast matches in Italy until 15th of October.

Serie A Chief Executive Luigi De Siervo told reporters last week that “We have the structure to offer (matches) directly to viewers…. we are considering this option.”

Discussions about acquiring the rights have reportedly been held with several actors. The current Serie A broadcasting rights is worth around EUR 930m per season and held by Sky and DAZN. They run until June next year.

Mediavision’s 2023 sports analysis show that 1.5 million 15-74-year-olds in the Nordics have interest in watching Serie A. Schibsted has the broadcasting rights for Serie A in Norway, TV2 in Denmark and Telia in Finland and Sweden. All contracts of broadcasting rights in the Nordics expire next year. More on the interest levels of sports leagues and the actors holding sports rights is available in Mediavision’s new Sports Analysis. Apple presents new iPhone and more

Yesterday, Apple held its annual fall event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. The event featured the unveiling of a range of new products, with the highlight being the introduction of the next-generation iPhone.

The new iPhone 15 comes in new colorways with an upgraded camera, and perhaps most notably, a new charging port. Apple will replace its own lightning connector with the industry standard USB-C. The change in the charging port was expected and prompted by EU legislation that requires connector standardization. Apple’s new headphones, the Airpods Pro model will also be equipped with USB-C port.

In addition, Apple presented two new smartwatches, one of which is the company’s first carbon-neutral product. Apple also unveiled two advanced models of the new iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.

Mediavision continuously monitor the consumer ownership of mobile as well as other media devices in the Nordics. Approximately 90 percent of the Nordics 15-74-year-olds possess at least one smart phone. Apple is the most popular brand, with a market share close to 40 percent. This, as well as an analysis of other consumer related media devices, is presented in Mediavision’s brand new Consumer Device Report; e.g. uptake of smart TVs, smart speakers, media centers etc. For more information regarding this report, please contact info@mediavision.se.

TV2 net ATP Tour rights in Norway

TV2 Norway has acquired broadcasting rights for the ATP tennis tour. The agreement runs from 2024 to 2026 and covers all tournaments at the ATP Masters 1000, ATP 500 and ATP 250 levels. In total, the annual live package includes more than 55 tournaments and 2,500 matches.

TV2 will replace Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) as the ATP Tour’s rights-holder in Norway. The new deal includes matches with 24-year-old Norwegian Casper Ruud, currently ranked no 9 in the ATP world rankings. The young Norwegian has won 10 ATP Tour singles titles and finished second at three Grand Slams and at the 2022 season-ending ATP Finals.

– TV 2 is happy to finally be able to include tennis in our rights portfolio. With Casper Ruud, Norway has a man at the top of the tennis world, and for TV 2 it is important to also have ownership of sports rights where Norwegians assert themselves on the very biggest stages, says TV 2’s sports editor Vegard Jansen Hagen.

Again, referring to Mediavision’s new Sports analysis, close to 10 percent of the 15-74-year-olds in Norway express an interest in watching tennis on TV/online. In Denmark the viewing interested is the highest in the region. Just as Norway, Denmark has a young talented tennis player – Holger Rune, who is currently ranked the 4th best tennis player in the world. Both Holger Rune and Casper Ruud have likely increased the interest in watching tennis in their respective home countries.
